Dual boot windows and slack
 

How would i dual boot slack and windows... i went to the slackware site and it was not very clear on how to do so... i know how to install slackware 9.0 fine... do i need to set up different partitions?...if so normally i would just have a swap with 256 mb and the rest i would leave for linux... swap (82) and linux (83) i think.. i might have gotten them mixed up... and how do i make a windows one??? wats the extension it needs? i would prefer to use lilo but i have no clue on how to start this... any help?

What version of windows? That will determine what direction to take (and which bootloader you may want to use).

windows me... and i dont really care about the bootloader... i guess which ever is the best and easisest... lilo i guess?

y won't anybody help me? i just want to boot linux and windows me... i have a recovery cd for my windows ME which i just boot and it will install itself... so do i just partition my hard drive half with linux and half with windows? and how would i install windows ME from there??? HELP! thnx

In this situation I normally install Windows first (try to minimize the size...depending on your needs). I'll then install slackware. When using fdisk, I normally create an extended partition using the remaining space on the hard disk, and then create logical partitions within the extended. Make the main logical partition (the one you will label as 'root' during the installation) bootable. Then, when you insall LILO (unfortunately, I believe it to be the only solution unless you will use another boot loader -- the Windows Me bootloader, to my knowledge, can't boot multiple OSes) the Slackware installer will see the "DOS" partition and ask you if you wish lilo to add this into its booting scheme. Select yes. Be sure to check www.tldp.org for a how-to or mini-how-to. There is lots of documentation on the web regarding this subject. It will take a bit of research, but any further info should be easily available.

thnx for the help... i got linux and windows on my system... i normally had windows and only windows on it.. and then i ran the slackware cd.. and used cfdisk and deleted the windows partitions and created them again with less space and added the linux partitions in it with a swap and installed linux... very easy... didnt know that it would not delete my windows.. i guess i was too scared to try... now i got them both... thnx 4 the help as i said before.

Just a little caution with Win ME. I hope you have your swap partition between your Win ME partition and Slackware Partition. The defragger in Win ME has a tendency to wander across partitions and screw up your linux partition. Happened to me a few times.

As far as ease of dual booting I recommend looking into grub. www.gnu.org/software/grub. It is pretty easy to use and has pretty good documentation about booting windows and linux and the like.

hmmm... i dont understand this... i got good news and bad news... i have installed slackware fine on my computer with windows me running with lilo :D but for some reason my internet explorer in windows is messing up badly!!!! i cant get my java working properly b/c it freezes.. and that never happened to me before... plus the windows update does not work... anybody know if there is a complication with linux and windows?
