Dual boot slack and windows

Hey All, this is going to be difficult to phrase, but i'll try my best.
I'll explain what i went through.

I began with Vista. Have had vista installed for the past 9 or so months, and decided to dual boot with Slackware 12.1

Well, here are my Drives

/dev/sda - 500GB 7200RPM Sata
/dev/sdb - 320GB 7200RPM Sata

I'll explain what I used each for.

/dev/sda (N: in windows) -
I had all my music, movies, Wow emulation stuff, SQL work, etc on it.

/dev/sdb (C: and D: in windows)

C: Was used for My windows installation and a few games here and there, most was stored on N

D: I cleared off D in order to use it as my linux partition.

Now that i've gotten that out of the way.

I began my installation on Slackware, I'm not a newbie to Linux, just to slack, and even then, i've had successful installs with it before. but this just went way out of wack.

I lost all info on /dev/sdb (C: and D:), but I still had my /dev/sda, so I'm like, okay ,this works for me, i'll just go with only Slackware, and re-partition /dev/sda into two partitions in a few days. Well no, Out of luck there. Seems when i went to install linux, there was only a 130GB partition on the /dev/sdb. well i got that fixed, and yay. So I had my 320GB hard drive back. well then I got Slackware installed, which i was content about. But then my Marvell Yukon NIC would not work. I tried multiple linux drivers, nothing. So I decided, hell with it, i'll go back to Windows and just install Slackware in a few, after i get this all resorted out and find a good working driver or figure out how to fix it. So here I go, back to windows.

Now this is where the actual problem starts. some how during the XP installation, I lost my /dev/sda. All 500GB, My music, movies, etc. No big, I can re-get it all later.

my problem is, both my drives show up correct

/dev/sda - 500GB
/dev/sdb - 320GB

However, in windows, and during the install, All I could get was

/dev/sda (500GB HD)
Only 130GB Free

/dev/sdb (320GB HD)
Only 130GB Free

Now I cleared off both drives, used the linux partition manager to set them both to 07, for NTFS. I've tried multiple tools, and Im stuck with two 130GB drives, so I lost out on over 500GB of space. I am not sure how to fix it, and I would like to get it all settled back out so I can have my PC working again, cause now i've decided to do 500GB for Windows, and 320GB for Linux, but i can't get either drive to work right.

Sorry for the long description, if anyone can help me, please let me know.

edit - Found this on someone elses, i got this error when trying to re-setup my windows partitions. and then i started getting the 130GB problem. Idk if this is the cause or what.

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 2550.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

It sounds like you have made a partition on each hd and you may have a lot of data left on each drive that you can save if you desire. I am not familiar with slack but you will need a live cd with a little program that will read ntfs files and a partitioning program which about all live cds come with. In fact if you like slack I believe they make a live cd for that purpose, I can not recall the name of it now.

In the first paragraph of your post, you indicate you have been using vista for a time and later refer to installing 'xp'? I'm not clear as to whether you can now boot xp (Now I cleared off both drives)? Installing xp or any earlier versions of windows after vista will cause problems with booting vista. You can get detailed info on correcting this from the microsoft support site. You should be able to save your data, either by checking out this problem or taking Larry Webb's suggestion.

The live cd is either CD1 of the Slackware set, or the DVD

The name of the live cd is Slackware.

It, however, does not have a specific NTFS access program. But you CAN mount the NTFS volume (at least to read the partition. It requires much more work/programs to get it to write safely), and at least get to the data (IF IT IS STILL THERE. With as much partitioning/repartitioning you have done, good luck!)

My reply

1. Im going to try a LiveCD, but what partition program is in there for me to use.

2. The problem isn't getting my old data back, its getting my Hardrive showing the actual space in Windows, not a fraction of it.

Partitioning programs

fdisk

cfdisk

Gparted

Qtparted

I would suggest you use one of the last two.

There is a live CD of Gparted available : http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...kage_id=271779

Fixed.

After installing Windows Home with Sp2 on a spare 4GB drive from my old old computer, I installed Swissknife and repartitioned. Next time im using a seperate drive for each OS. :D
