Unhappy dual boot install help

I have recently revived my old Pentium 166 from the ashes just like the Phoneix in the old story's. I found the hard drive still had win98 and alot of programs on it I'd rather not lose.

But I want to Install Slack on it to use as a backup machine at home. If I install another hard drive(3rd one) how do I make this machine dual boot without harming my data on the other 2 drives.

I don't really care if they can see each other or not I just want to be able to use both OS's...

One possible way is to use intall it using LILO on a boot disk. I would suggest creating the installation disks (bare.i, etc. or whatever you would need) and go as you normally would. Once you get to the part where it asks you where you want to put LILO, select the option that uses a floppy. Using this method it wouldn't touch anything on the other 2 drives. It would also keep anyone from accidentally booting linux without that boot disk (nice way to keep from confusing the casual user).

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have troubles.

so I could just do a regular install onto the 3rd drive and then tell it boot off of the floppy only and the install would be simple and the same as on my other PC....?

Yep. Two things to remember:

- Make sure when you run fdisk you select the correct drive.
- Make sure your target is the correct partition(s).

You do that and the install will ignore the windows drives. Once you're done you can mount the windows partitions (drives) using:

mount -t msdos /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows

Of course you would replace hda1 with your actual windows partition but I think you get the picture.

have fun

During the slack install you'll get the option to add the windows partitions when you set up fstab and lilo.
