Question DSL: Connected but Not !!! [resolved]


Ok, I now.. the subject doesn't help and sounds confusing, well, IT IS!

Ok, I'm Slackware 10.0 (with some touches) running KDE

I installed the DSL's drivers and everything is smooth (I have a speed touch DSL)

After I connect, uisng speedtouch-start), the link is created and I'm ''connected" but I can't access any website, via URL or IP for that maters.

ifconfig shows the local loopback, the ethernet and the ppp0 connection of the DSL.
route shows only the local, ethernet, ppp0 and the default which is set to the ethernet (my current gateway is throuhgh the ethernet).

I deleted the default and added another gatewayed one through the DSL's IP, but no use!

I pinged Google's IP -> Host not reachable.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a problem with domain name resolution. What does it say in /etc/resolv.conf? Does it say anything different in /etc/ppp/resolv.conf? It should have at least one line

nameserver xx.yy.zz.dd

with the numerical address of your ISP's domain nameserver.

Well, they are different

/etc/ppp/resolv.conf holds my ISP's DNS ::
nameserver 195.226.224.72
nameserver 195.226.224.74

/etc/resolv.conf holds my Network Gateway IP (I'm using a winbox as a temp gateway for now till I'm able to run the DSL over Linux) ::
nameserver 192.168.0.1

It's more than a DNS issue, since I can't even ping IP addresses, which should work even without the presence of any DNS server!

should not your gateway be contacting the DSL provider not your machine?
when one uses a router the router does the DSL connecting, and your machine jsut brings up the ethernet connection to the router

so then I think your resolv.conf s should be the same

RESOLVED!

Ok!first of all, THANKS ALOT!

That resolv.conf thing helped, I copied the contents of /etc/ppp/resolv.conf into /etc/resolv.conf
then modified the route IP table and it worked!

But now, a question arises: Do I have to manually add the 'default' route each time I connect?!!
cuz that means I'll have to route the new IP when connected, and delete it when disconnected!

Here's a glance @ route::
root@MBH:~# route

If I disconnect, I'll have to manually remove the default route and add another one when I connectagain :/

Isn't there an easier way to do so ?!

I assume you have only ONE ethernet card.


To solved the default route problem:
Just leave the ethernet card UNCONFIGURED in the /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf.


Your ethernet card do not need an IP address to use PPPoE.


Or if you don't feel comfortable with that. LEAVE the Gateway="XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX" empty.


OR, if your NIC is getting IP and gateway from the "adsl-modem" - via DHCP, then you don't have much choice other then leaving it to static IP, but don't put any IP there.

There is another way to leave it as DHCP but refused to receive the gateway info. Check out man dhcpcd. Then you got to edit rc.inet1 script.

First of all, thank you all for your help!

Second of all, I guess I wasn't clear About my state. You see, currently I'm using a windows (a.k.a crapdows) as my gateway on the network. But as WE ALL KNOW: crapdows sucks. So I was trying for a while to compile the drivers of my ADSL and work it out on Linux so I could put Linux instead as my gateway.

it's not an issue currently but I was thinking: even if set to DHCP, would that require a manual reload to rc.inet1, or would the gateway be set/unset automatically?
