what did you compile into your kernel?
what did you compile as modules?
did you install glide?
what does glxinfo say?

Where do you compiler DRI to the kernel?
glide? does that have to be installed seperately!

when configuring a kernel, the graphics card related information is under character devices.
there is agpgart, which i have enabled as a module along with the corresponding chipset for my motherboard...and there is also the DRM which is built-in to the kernel with the 3dfx voodoo sub as a module.

and yes i did have to install glide seperately...it is on one of the slack cd's

You have to set kernel according to advice up and after check your x86config in /etc/X11 (slackware) this lines:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Voodoo5" # type cards
VendorName "3dfx" # manufacturer
Driver "tdfx" # driver for cards with 3dfx chip

EndSection

and

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 1"
Device "Voodoo5" # devices
Monitor "My monitor"

this element's must be equals ==> Section "Device" --> Identifier "Voodoo5" with Section "Screen" --> Device "Voodoo5"

this is my config http://rabbit.phorum.cz/config
