Drawing tablet for GNU/Linux
 

Hi,

I'd like to buy a drawing tablet (digitizing tablet) that I intend to use with GIMP (or whatever program you might recommend that is better) in GNU/Linux. For this I'd like some advice as to which tablet I should buy for this purpose. I.e. I want a drawing tablet that is well supported, as in good drivers and all of its features supported.

I'm tired of having to struggle for days with getting hardware to work and I'd like to buy something that "just works" for once. I've read and heard that Wacom is well supported, but could anyone recommend something more specific? Which model is best supported? Ideally I'd like something that is not incredibly expensive, I had in mind something like $200-$250.

I have a Wacom Bamboo Connect that works great. Support for the third generation of Wacom tablets (the ones retailing now) is not included until kernel 3.3, so it will not work out of the box on Slackware 13.37 or -current. There is a backport for the latest Wacom tablets in the form of input-wacom, but despite the documentation it only supports kernel version 2.6.38 and later due to a header introduced in that kernel version (mt.h). input-wacom should work (though I haven't tested it) in Slackware-current. I personally am running kernel 3.4.4 in Slackware 13.37 and my Wacom tablet works perfectly without any further need for configuration. You do *not* have to upgrade xf86-input-wacom.

I think all models are probably well supported but only in recent kernels. There unfortunately isn't an out-of-the-box solution for Slackware at this point, though at least there is no further configuration required beyond a kernel version bump.

Thanks for the reply. I have no issues with recompiling my kernel, I do that regularly anyway.

How about the "Wacom Intuos5 Touch S"? Do you or anyone else have any experience with that one? Will it work?
