downloading slows down computer considerably

whenever i start downloading something my computer starts running really crappy. right when it finishes downloading it speeds right back up, but while downloading it chugs a lot. is there a reason for this? i'ts more of a nuisance than anything but i'd really like it if it wouldn't do that. i have a cable modem that normally downloads 100-120 k/sec. any help would be appreciated

iono. maybe you could try dling using different methods.

If this happens when initiating a download from a browser, then the browser may have a memory leak or something. Do you run gkrellm or any other application that will let you see the status of your RAM usage? Also, have you tried initiating a download using wget to see if the same problem occurs?

I had the same problem because my network card and some other device (gpu in my case) where sharing irq"s. Enabling APIC and ACPI solved the problem for me
