Dolphin freezes when browsing large NFS directories - Slackware 14.1

I have a system with a clean install of Slackware64 14.1. Using KDE, Dolphin file manager freezes up when browsing NFS directories with a large number of folders.

I've tried this with the stock KDE 4.10.5 and also Alien Bob's KDE 4.11.5. Same results with both versions. I never had this problem on Slackware 14.0 or lower.

Has anyone else ran into this issue? I haven't been able to find any log messages to indicate what might be failing. For reference, the directory isn't even that big. It has ~970 directories under it.

To add to the confusion, I was able to browse a directory with over 13,000 files. Dolphin did not crash. It's the directory with over 970 subdirs that causes Dolphin to freeze.

I found a folder with non-ascii characters in the problem directory.

Code:

ls -al *[^[:ascii:]]*
I'll test it tonight to see if that was the problem.

I purged the folder with non-ascii characters, and Dolphin is still freezing.

if it's over wifi it may just be waiting for the listing to come over the network - does it eventually work if you wait?

It's over GigE. The folders show up; it usually freezes randomly as I'm scrolling through the list.

Any tips on debugging Dolphin with gdb?

Still no luck. I also had Dolphin freeze when browsing an NFS directory with only a few files in it.

To clarify, when I say "freeze", I mean it locks up completely. I have to kill the process - it never comes back to life, no matter how long I wait.

Any other suggestions/ideas?

Stop using that nasty PoS Dolphin. Try Krusader and see if that makes any difference, or even Konqueror (but imho Krusader is the best there is).

If you still want to use dolphin maybe ensure you don't have some preference set which is causing you issues - you couold delete the section for the dolphin config in ./.kde somwhere and try again

I really want to like Krusader, but I have a few issues with it. Maybe I just missed the settings...

1. No selection marquee. I want to select multiple files with the mouse.

2. No "places" sidebar. I want my places/favorites/bookmarks clearly visible on the side or top.

3. Krusader feels cluttered. I don't need two panes most of the time. Dolphin is more visually appealing. Yeah, I can see why Krusader would excel for getting "real work" done. But for file browsing, I prefer Dolphin.

4. I appreciate all of the powerful features in Krusader, but I find myself doing most of that stuff on the command-line. I don't think using a GUI for most of that would speed up my workflow. I just need a GUI file-browser for casual selection of media files; I'm not really in need of a full blown file-manager on that system.

Both Dolphin and Konqueror crash under the same conditions. Also, I can only reproduce it when in Detail view mode. I couldn't get it to crash using Icon or Compact view modes.

I know this is an old thread, but I just ran into this issue myself. It effects Dolphin and Konqueror, but not Xfe. It only started happening in my Films directory recently and is getting worse. I have a lot of subdirectories in the folder. It seems to have reached some limit with what it can handle, but yet it's intermittent when it will actually lock up.

I'm using sshfs (FUSE), so It's not NFS specific. I'm also on Slackware64 14.1.

It only happens in "Details View" mode, so as a workaround I use "Compact View" mode. The bug also does not seem to effect "Icons View" mode.

I'm hoping this is fixed in KDE 4.14.3 that will ship in Slackware Next (14.2). I'm guessing it's a KIO issue, since it effects more than one KDE file manager.

You can try Eric's ktown for 14.1. It isn't the latest version on -current, but it is still a semi-recent version of 4.14.3 (from April 2015).

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just wait for 14.2, my workaround will do until then. I just hope the KDE devs fixed it before 4.14.3.

4.14.8 still seems to have the same issue.
