I have been trying to get a Linux system running some simple functionality for about four years now. They all seem to suck.
I have tried Slack before and it would not compile C/C++ code.
I have used Red Hat and it would not recognize my network cards, even though they are Linux compatible.
I am now trying to get Slack 9.1 to work as a gateway for my Windows box. I can get it to connect to the internet. I can ping the Windows box. But no matter what HowTo, or instructions, or NAT script I try to use, it does not work.
My experience of Linux in general has been nothing but problems. I started out on DOS. I am good with computers. I can read documentation and figure things out. But Linux is the biggest piece of crap ever!!!!
You never know if the How-To you are reading is even intended for the distribution you are using. So sometimes it is telling you to edit files that don't exist.
If anybody can help me get a gateway working I would appretiate it.
Don't send me to a web site that has any How-To's or instructions, I have probably tried it already. Does anybody know what they are doing? HELP!
you know how to use DOS? could you give me hints on how to use it? because i'm not very good with computers and you know, that whole OS that can fit on a 5-1/4 floppy is just way too complicated for me...
i'm sorry buddy but probably anyone here who could help you really likes linux so even if they believed that "I have been trying to get a Linux system running some simple functionality for about four years now" they wouldn't help. And if you've really been trying for 4 years then here's a piece of advice, quit and pick up something else like basket weaving or quilting
ok back to business... wait, did I just read this correctly?

Sorry but I have to quote Peter Griffin now

If you are looking for a silver platter you are looking in the wrong place. I'm not sure I should waste my time and address your concerns however my desire to be a helpful member of the community squelches my desire to flame you back !
"I have been trying to get a Linux system running some simple functionality for about four years now"
That is a long time ! There is no doubt that "Linux" requires a degree of commitment beyond that of some other operating systems like Windows or MacOS. But that is part of its charm and if you don't get any enjoyment out of the pursuit of knowledge to achieve your goals then you may be running the wrong OS.
"I have tried Slack before and it would not compile C/C++ code"
Would it not compile your code or some open source package ? I have been using Slackware for some time now and gcc for longer then that and never had problems with the compiler. Maybe you could be more specific.
" I am now trying to get Slack 9.1 to work as a gateway for my Windows box. I can get it to connect to the internet. I can ping the Windows box. But no matter what HowTo, or instructions, or NAT script I try to use, it does not work."
Again specifics are required to answer your questions. What howtos are you reading .. lets have a look at your firewall script. What are the error messages if any?
"My experience of Linux in general has been nothing but problems. I started out on DOS. I am good with computers. I can read documentation and figure things out. But Linux is the biggest piece of crap ever!!!!"
It could be time to give up, some times you just have to let it go! I here they are doing some amazing things with freedos you may want to check out that project. Reading and learning to read documentation is often a stumbling block for people new to Linux, however the above comment regarding your ability to read documentation and figuring things out apparently does not apply to Linux. Since millions of people are running Linux, I believe this is a testament to its documentation and support system in general. Possibly where you have gone wrong is by insulting the people you are asking for help.
"You never know if the How-To you are reading is even intended for the distribution you are using. So sometimes it is telling you to edit files that don't exist."
HOWTOS are general help documents and typically don't reflect the configuration of any particular distribution unless otherwise stated. The idea of these documents is not to hand a user a config but rather to teach them about a particular piece of software. Once you understand the software well enough you should be able to apply the principals you learned to any distribution.
You may even be able to adapt the examples found in the howto to suite your needs.
"If anybody can help me get a gateway working I would appretiate it."
There is no free lunch here! You are going to have to learn something .
"Don't send me to a web site that has any How-To's or instructions, I have probably tried it already. Does anybody know what they are doing? HELP!"
If you are not interested in a HOWTO the most authoritative resource for most any software package is man. Man pages are distributed with most software packages and one would think that the author of the software would know what they are doing. As far as I have read, this is right up your ally in terms of reading Documentation and figuring things out!
man iptables
man sysctl
man ifconfig
man modporbe
That should do it as far as documentation goes for building a gateway.
you are 100% correct: linux sucks, you can't compile code in slackware, red hat can't detect network cards, you can't have a linux gateway, the manuals don't have the right information, and no one knows what they are doing. have a nice day!
Man, do I feel stupid! The answer was there all along, Linux sucks! I've been blind for all these years and the answer was right in front of me all the time. Thanks for opening my eyes!
Well bye now, off to install XP. I'll be sure to check back here when I run into any troubles!
OK, I'm gonna pretend that you didn't say linux sucks and then ask for help in a LINUX FORUM. Not to mention the fact that most users here are pretty passionate about their respective operating system and linux in general. So starting out by saying Linux sucks is ......um..er.........not cool....... Anyway I digress.
A very easy way to get started running a NAT/firewall on a Slackware box is to take a look at the firestarter project. I know, I know....you said no links to other sites but just humor me here, It just doesn't get any easier than this. They have very through documentation on their site and you should have no problems what so ever. The only caveat, in your case, is there isn't a slack pack available on their site so you'll have to compile it form source (unless you can find a slack pack out there somewhere) As you mentioned you had code compilation problems with Slackware. Unfortunately, no one here can help you unless you are a little more specific with that particular problem. I can tell you that I have compiled firestarter with Slackware 9.1 and had a windows XP box running behind it with no known problems.

Why on Earth are you trying to use it then? Linux is not for everyone. You'd probably be much happier continuing to use DOS. I mean, if you can "read documentation and figure things out" yet can't "compile C/C++ code" then there's really no point in trying to help.
Have you enabled ip forwarding - simplest way rather than echo 1 > bla, blah blah all the time (as root)
chmod +x /etc/rc.d/rc.ip_forward
/etc/rc.d/rc.ip_forward start
You might get some help if you post what you've done so far including your iptables setup, and interface names on Slack as some people might think it kinda sucks that you haven't

Were it not for linux you'd not be able to post here or surf nearly anywhere, since over 80% of all web pages are served by linux/apache. That's a LOT of sucky servers out there!

i have massive doubts whether you'll really appreciate the helps given to you..... Watch your f***ed up attitude. if you are good with computers, use windows and dos, y use linux, the os that u think is a crap?
