Do I really have to make the boot floppys?

I am currently trying to install slackware linux. I can boot to the a: prompt and get the cd player initialized. I can read off the slackware iso cd but am not sure which file to run? Do i really have to make 1 boot disk and 2 root disks?

Let me make sure of this. You can boot of the Slackware CD without a floppy in the drive?
If so just follow the on screen directions. No need to make floppies.
If not, yes make them. (They load a linux file system and let you run the installer)

In a nutshell, yes.
Linux executable's can't run in another operating environment. The boot and root floppies load a "mini" version of linux into your computers memory, which in turn allows the executable on the CD to run and install. There are other ways, like installing over a serial connection or removing the Hard drive and swapping it to another machine, but the boot floppies are much easier.

There are many model's of presario, some of which won't boot without the special compaq partition on the harddrive.
A hunt through google groups suggests "when the compaq logo and a flashing curser in upper RH corner appear hit the F10 key "be quick"

If you can't boot from your CD drive like i couldn't. go on the internet and download SmartBootManager it works no matter what your OS or Computer make or BIOS. It just brings up a menu and you select which device you want to boot from. it saved me a lot of time when i was installing
