Discussion: Slackware and GRUB
I've heard and read several times things from Linux gurus more or less stating that GRUB is far superior to LILO as a boot manager. That it is both more flexible as a boot loader and a powerful tool for recovering systems that have messed up MBRs, lost root passwords, etc.
My questions are: i) if the above is true, why doesn't Slackware employ GRUB instead of LILO?; ii) did anyone install GRUB on Slackware and if so how do you like it and are there any issues? thanks. |
I actually prefer Lilo to Grub and the reasons are:
1. More documentation as more use Lilo. 2. Easier to configure and understand. 3. Gets the job done. I'm not sure why Slackware doesn't give Grub as an option but it really doesn't bother me as I don't find either superior to one another. They both boot your system up, that's all. To me its something I rarely see or have to mess with, only after a new kernel compile or if I install another distro, etc. |
two words: make bzlilo

At the time I was evaluating grub it wasn't capable of booting my ataraid array. Lilo was able to boot this. Never needed any of the so called 'more powerfull features' of grub, lilo is working fine and I know how to handle and configure it.
