I have to synchronize files in a directory that is on nine networked computers. I've installed DirSync Pro, a java-based program.Has anyone used it? I don't need to be losing files on any of the comps!
I use DirSync Pro on a WinXP-Laptop for backup.
It does its job, but has some shortcomings compared to rsync.
E.g. afaik it's not possible to exclude a certain path from your root-backupdir -- you have to exclude via patterns.
Some time ago I searched for sync packages for a number of cases where incremental backup was needed, both in Windows and Linux.
For Linux, I downloaded DirSyncPro and Unison.
DirSyncPro seems to work properly, it is simple, OS-independent and also seems to be very easy to use... however, my choice was to use Unison, which was presented by someone in an Internet thread as "the" sync application.
I tried DirSyncPro a few times; it worked fine. However I haven't did any serious work with it, and so I don't think I am the best person to say anything about DirSyncPro.
In contrast, Unison is plenty of options and features, and also offers both console and GTK user frontends. The only thing that makes me uncomfortable with it is that you definitely have got to read the manuals (I have to say they are very good!) as Unison is far from intuitive.
Of course rsync does a good job and could help you along some automation scripts.
Hope this helps you some way.

Reason: More clear phrasing about Unison.
I read the rsync manual. What fun! I still can't figure out which letters to use. It took me 5 minutes to figure our DirSync Pro. It worked fine. But, being the cli lover that I am, I need to learn rsync. Does anybody know where I can find sample scripts for syncing directories with rsync? The man is a tad confusing. Thanks.

Did you read the USAGE section of rsync manpage ?
It took me less than 30 sec to figure out rsync when I checked that section
