difference between console, tty and ttyS

According to the comments inside /etc/securetty, console and tty1-6 are on the physical console but what is the difference?
Also, what does it mean by remote ttys? As I understand, the settings in this file only affect telnet connections, am I right? ssh connections are not affected.

tty is a virtual console, and ttyS is a serial console.
