dhcpcd wlan0 doesn't assign ip address

i've been trying to get my wlan up and running for days now but nothing so far. hopefully someone out can help me out.

Here's what I'm running:
Slackware 10.2
Linux 2.4.31
ndiswrapper 1.8
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter

first, dhcpcd wlan0 doesn't assign an ip address.
second, whenever i turn on the physical switch for the wireless it noticibly degrades the performance of my laptop. to the point where text cant be inputed fluently into a console. im not sure where this problem is coming from. possibly ndiswrapper.

any help is greatly appreciated.

As to slowing down, dmesg might be usefull for diagnose. As to dhcpcd I had same problem. I need to have the card turned on ( special acer_acpi module required on acer laptop ) and a really good signal. Other thing is how is your dhcp server configured. Mine has a list of MAC addresses. Unknown cards won't have IP set.
