make install????...u should never run make install from kernel sources?..if u need guidance in compiling u can ask!.
btw...u are getting errors probably because u dont have ur modules installed!!..

I am curious about one thing, did your problem comes up when you recompiled the kernel and rebooted? If yes, then the new kernel may have some problem.

Try falling back to the old kernel and try once again.

While compiling in slackware, make install usually installs the lilo on mbr, if this is not what you want, you should do

make && make modules_install

Then manually copy the arch/x86/boot/bzImage to the /boot and rename it to the kernel whatever you wish.

Usually we compile the kernel in /usr/src/<version> and symbolic it to the /usr/src/linux folder.

It seems you may have some inconsistency while installing and using the new kernel.

Another suggestion, when you are rebuilding a kernel, it will be better to try the last stable release, like 2.6.31.4, IMHO.
