device default?

Hey I want to make arTs work with ALSA but I'm loosing my patence with it... this is what I get normall when I select ALSA :

default can not be opened for play back (Permission denied).

First of all WTF is default and second why isn't in my dev's dir?

When I chmod 666 mixer, dsp and midi now it says I can't play back from either ALSA or OSS WTF is going on here?

First of all... calm down and tell us exactly what you did.

Which kernel and which alsa version do you use?

If you have installed from the alsa-project.org-sources... did you run snddevices?
