Desktop and mobile web browsers and bookmark transfers
 

I've googled but haven't found any solution yet.
I need to be able to transfer bookmarks from my desktop to my mobile Android devices (phone and tablet for now).
I need periodic transfer (update) when I have enough new bookmarks on my desktop, to get them to my mobile devices. When I choose to do so.
I don't mind doing import export and "jump through hoops" if needed (we're Slackware users afterall ;) )
I only need it one way for now, desktop to mobile (both ways would be a bonus but not necessary right now).
Important!!!
I don't want to use any sync or go through any third party online services.
It all has to happen at my place and off-line. I don't want to be dependent on anyone else!!!

My research so far shows that Firefox, Chrome, and Opera can't do it.
They all omitted the imported/export functionality in their mobile browsers for online sync.
I have not tried any other browsers for Android yet.

Anyone knows of any other browser for Android that can import Firefox bookmarks or html file?
If I have to give up Firefox on desktop then I gladly will if there is another browser with similar features that runs on Slackware.

I'm getting seriously dissatisfied with Mozilla and their direction.
And the regular versions of Firefox are getting quite "Gnomized" by the idiots (Alex Limi one of the worst) in Mozilla UX team so I switched to the ESR version and will not go back to the regular one any more.
So I don't mind switching to another browser at all. It looks like Mozilla is a sinking ship unless they get their shit together.
And Firefox mobile is a dysfunctional garbage.

Firefox can be configured to use your own private Sync Server. This is how I created such a Mozilla Sync Server: http://docs.slackware.com/howtos:network_services:weave. I have one running on a server in my own house, completely private and no one can snoop into it.
Mozilla sync is an unattended service, you do not export/import anything manually. Using my private Sync server I was able to have all my bookmarks and browser history available on my phone as well.

For Chrome/Chromium I was unable to find a working implementation of their Sync server for private use, even though Google has example server code online.
Which is a shame because during the past month I went from exclusively using Firefox to almost exclusively using Chromium. I miss my private sync!

I might have to give it a try, as much as I don't want to use sync (don't trust it and prefer using manual export/import) but since there is apparently no other solution, I don't have a choice.
It's interesting that no developers have taken this on.
Am I the only one using bookmarks who doesn't want to depend on online sync?

I'm sorry to bounce in the discussion like this but you could use a personal online bookmark manager (of course, installed on your server, for example: http://sitebar.org/downloads.php).. I've used it for a while and it's quite ok...

Yeah I also still use Sitebar. I have installed it on my home server and I have the bookmarks collection available everywhere because the server is connected to the Internet through port-forwarding.
I like it a lot.

Can you not just use the bookmarks.json file and move it over, that is the way I do it on my computers?
I just replace the current json file with the new one.

This might be a good temporary solution until proper import/export is implemented.
Again, my ultimate goal is to be independent of outside online access.
This still requires to run a server. It's still a dependency.
I'd love to have my bookmarks backed up on a flash drive and be able to import them to my phone,tablet, or any other device without having to use anything else.
Just like I can now export my Firefox bookmarks, copy them to a flash drive, take them to another computer, and import them there.

Computers yes, but not Firefox mobile. And if I don't want to use Firefox mobile (because it's really a piece of garbage) and get my bookmarks to Opera or Chrome, then that's a no go. Stuck again.

Thanks Ponce. Yes, this definitely looks very cool.
Would I use it, most likely no.
The dependence on an extension and cloud server creates two huge potential breakage points.
The crazy upgrade cycle of Firefox and frequent breaking of extensions would be enough to put me off from using this.
The need for a cloud server is another deal breaker.
