Question Default apps on slackware, what do you think?

Hi,

what applications you think would be good to be the default on slackware? be realistic

I mean, for example; come with ccrypt or htop even pidgin-otr (has better encryption than pidgin-encryption), src2pkg or sbopkg?

Or maybe you want something like digikam

so, what are you think? what application you think should come with default slackware? and give some reason...

best regards,
John

Hi,

I'm satisfied with software defaults as they currently are.
I can always add or delete software packages. PV & team provide a wide sample of software. If not then Slackbuilds will sometimes have what I need. If not then just build a package from source.

+1 again for sbopkg in /extra.
I'm not going to say "a bar and lapdancers" as I did on a previous thread like this.

I am pretty happy with what I get, on most of my systems (except my main rig) I modify it anyways, so I mostly don't care.
+1 for sbopkg in /extra, would be convenient.

-1 for sbopkg in /extra . The official website has an up-to-date Slackware package already. If your installation is networked, you can get the latest version as soon as your card is up. Otherwise you don't need it at all.

Thumbs up

Yes would be nice sbopkg in extra... maybe not everybody use ccrypt or pidgin-otr but replace that kind of program for better ones more secure, would be convenient. If any one need to use some encryption would use something more secure. ccrypt instead of crypt.

And what other program you think should be the default?

Also some kind of simple gtk pdf reader would be welcomed by me. And maybe Xfburn would be nice too. Slackware seems to center more around KDE, which I find rather distracting and way to flashy to do real work. However I love XFCE that comes with Slackware, just by default it feels kind of incomplete, until sbopkg comes into play. So one or two simple gtk applications for cd burning, image viewing and document reading would not hurt.

Just my two cents

sbopkg is the first package I look for after each new installation.

There are very few things that are missing in Slackware but they are a pain.

1. GNOME. The community support for GNOME is not a proper excuse for a fully supported distribution implementation.

2. PAM. It is possible to install PAM from /extra/sources/pam but unless it is properly configured and other integral applications are built against it, it will only serve cosmetic purposes.

3. Multilib support. Alien Bob is doing a good job, but integrating multilib seamlessly in Slackware would be better.

Not going to happen.

Likely going to happen in future - it is kind of inevitable. But when, is the question. In one year? In ten years?

Not going to happen. Multilib's need should go away when all the proprietary stuff finally moves to 64-bit. But, the money-happy vendors are reluctant to do something just because it the right thing to do.
