I agree that the folks working on our SlackBuilds do an awesome job. I don't mind tweaking the install scrips, I do so when needed for my particular installation.

Thank you for the replies. I'll be standing by for 14.... :hattip:

Over the last two weeks, I ran about 200 SlackBuild scripts from SBo through current. The vast majority of these scripts will build without any problems. The few remaining percent will not build and make you spend a few sunny afternoons at home or in your office trying to figure it out.

My advice: wait until the SBo crew has figured it all out, and then go about your compiling business. Otherwise, be prepared to have a hard time with things like gst-plugins-* or Brasero, for example. I don't know why this is so, but the GNOME stuff is especially nasty in requiring new quirks and new cascading build dependencies on every new release of every single application. In my brain, the word "GNOME" sits next to concepts like "waiting line for passports" or "tooth extraction".

You can find the set of up-to-date SlackBuild scripts that have been readied for Slackware 14 here: http://slackbuilds.org/cgit/slackbuilds/tree/ . No need to wait until the official release if you need that information now.

Thank you for all your hard work. I've spent a few afternoon's tweaking SBO scripts. NBD. More than once I've kicked off the script and headed out the door for a couple of hours, returned home and found that it kicked out a fatal error just as I walked out the door. Usually my keystroke was misinterpreted.

I'll wait. :) I know it will be awesome.

With a new stable Slackware (I know, I know, that's redundant) impending, people aren't needing much in the way of help right now I guess?

Trouble is, my reputation points have been built up mostly from posts like that. :)

Well throughout history some have contributed to the technical inheritance of the world, and others the cultural.....

Yeah that's sums up BrianL.... "Cultured" ;)

Mmm... Maybe someone will sooner or later make us think he or she is a reincarnation of Leonardo da Vinci?

No, I'm more like Shakespeare than da Vinci. A literary genius rather than an all-round one. But far too modest to admit it on a public forum. ;)

That would be Pat. Everyone knows his technical prowess, but have you read the comments to the scripts and Changelogs? GENIUS! :D

And when it's out, the URL of the LQ forums for Slackware will be self-fulfilling: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14.

ruario 09-17-2012 03:10 AM

@aneroid: That is not a good thing. When Slackware 15 comes out we will probably have people regularly questioning why the URL is out of date. :(

aneroid 09-17-2012 07:40 PM

@ruario: lol, perhaps. But then we could petition the LQ Admins to URL map all http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-* here ;)

Although, I'm surprised they haven't already done that based on 'forum-names' since they're already mapped and look unique:(Yes, I realise that the -XY number part is the id from forumid in http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/forumdisplay.php?forumid=14 and that's what the code actually parses: So http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-15/ redirects to 'Other *NIX Forums' which is forumid=15.)
