D-Link System DWA-140 802.11n Adapter [ralink rt2870] - Not recognized
 

Hi guys, i just bought a d-link usb adapter(DWA-140 802.11n) with the expectation that it would work with Linux, as it uses a ralink chipset. After recompiling the kernel with the appropriate drivers enabled, this is what I get when up'ing the wlan1 interface(the wireless usb adapter):
According to this thread - http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=81945 - the problem is with kernel 2.6.31 and not the previous versions, but unfortunately i downgraded do 2.6.30.9 and the same thing happened.

my dmesg prints the following after typing that command:
Isn't this firmware supposed to be compiled by the kernel??

Does anyone have this usb adapter running, and is it a problem of the latest 2.6.31 kernel?

I am running Slackware 13.0 (and as of this moment kernel 2.6.31.6).

Not all firmware is supplied by the kernel. You can get ralink firmware here http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php?s=2

Choose Firmware RT2870USB(RT2870/RT2770), unzip the tarball and move rt2870.bin and the license to /lib/firmware.

I've been working on my wireless card now for a couple of weeks and trying to get it to work!! It's an EDIMAX, but it uses the same ralink chipset. I was pulling my hair out trying to get it to work, but it sounds that the firmware is the only thing I had left to install. I'll have to give that a try!!

Thanks guys, now im able to initialize the interface.Unfortunately now I have another problem - Can't get dhcp to obtain an address other than the IPV4ALL 169.254.203.198 ....The wireless settings are perfect as I'm good to go with another usb wireless adapter so there must be something wrong with this one.I have noted that in my dmesg the following appears:

Try to temporarily disable encryption, and use the DWA-140 802.11n to connect to the un-encrypted network.

I believe that dmesg code you posted elates to encryption incompatibilities. Either wrong passphrase, or the chosen level from the router is not compatible with the implemented level on the wireless device. I have an RT73 device that does not like wpa2 from some Belkin routers, but has worked fine with Linksys, 2Wire and some others.

Ok, I just tried it using Slackware 13. It FINALLY worked out of the box using wicd. Have you tried using wicd? If you are not running a gui, it has a text utility that runs on ncurses.

I have tried connecting without encryption but the same thing happens. When I try with my other usb adapater - the D-Link System DWL-G122 802.11g Adapter [ralink rt73] - it works just fine and i can see this in dmesg:

It should be something related either to the firmware or kernel driver. The problem is that I need the N adapter for it's extended range.

I have Windows as a second OS on my computer. Could Windows work with my D-Link DWA-510 if I set up firmware for Linux?

D-Link Wireless USB Adapter DWL-G122 powers off after few minutes
 

I couldn't get my internel card to turn on, so I plugged in a d-link usb wifi and got connected, but after just a few short minutes it powers down and disconnects. It restarts after reboot, and does the same thing, it recognizes it and connects auto, then after a few minutes powers down. What do I do to keep it powered up. I am very new to linux/ubuntu, and not too familiar with how to use the terminal and all, is there a way like windows that allows you to look at the system, tell it what to keep active or not?
Am running newest version of Ubuntu, just downloaded it a few days ago, took me this long just to get it on the internet, albeit just for the few short minutes before it powers down the usb stick
