I no longer have that ability. (The placeholder boxes appear).

Code:
xlsfonts | grep cyrillic
produces a nul output. My /var/log/Xorg.0.log has:

Code:
...
(**) |-->Input Device "Keyboard1"
(**) Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
(**) XKB: model: "pc104"
(**) Option "XkbLayout" "us, ru"
(**) XKB: layout: "us, ru"
(==) Keyboard: CustomKeycode disabled
(**) FontPath set to "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic/"
...
(**) Option "CoreKeyboard"
(**) Keyboard1: Core Keyboard
(**) Option "Protocol" "standard"
(**) Keyboard1: Protocol: standard
(**) Option "AutoRepeat" "500 30"
(**) Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
(**) Keyboard1: XkbRules: "xorg"
(**) Keyboard1: XkbModel: "pc104"
(**) Option "XkbLayout" "us, ru"
(**) Keyboard1: XkbLayout: "us, ru"
(**) Option "CustomKeycodes" "off"
(**) Keyboard1: CustomKeycodes disabled
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Keyboard1" (type: KEYBOARD)
...
This as far as I can tell shows that the cyrillic fonts folder is in the font path and X should allow for an 'ru' keyboard configuration. To troubleshoot I have reinstalled the x11-fonts-cyrillic-6.8.2-noarch-1 package and made cyrillic the only font in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, all to no avail. Any suggestions on a path forward (other than installing kde18i) would be greatly appreciated.

My machine runs Slackware:Current
Fluxbox Window Manager

Thank you for your time and assistance

where are you trying to use these fonts?
have you tried using the aliases?
do they show up in xfontsel?

Just so it's known, I had forgotten that I needed to pull a fonts package off of linuxpackages.net. Once I reinstalled those fonts (default X cyrillic fonts have never worked for me) everything was groovy. Anyone else having similar trouble I would direct you to the afore mentioned package.
