Just wanted a "seasoned" Slack users opinion(s) ....
I have tried numerous distros, want to stay focused on 1, namely Slackware, am running 9.0 and like what I see.
After coming from MS, what I really miss, and want to pursue is java & flashplayer capabilities. This seems the primary reason why I continue to have XP on this box.
Can I request your thoughts, trials, successes? I am currently using Netscape, but growing tired rather quickly of it's "bloatedness" though it seems to run a bit faster than Mozilla IMO. I want to get the full web experience under Linux, which has me desperately seeking the plug-ins mentioned above.
Is there a preferred browser to work under to obtain these capabilities? I am not "locked into" any specific browser, am aware of phoenix but don't have that installed.
Fill me in on your opinions ....................................
I'm not a slack user, but in my experience Flash and Java seem to work equally well under any Gecko-based browser (Mozilla, Galeon, and Phoenix being the ones I've tried).
As wapcaplet said above, Flash and Java support is pretty easy to get for the Gecko browser. Head over to blackdown.org for Java related items. I use blackdown because at the time, they were/are? the only ones who had j3d for Linux. Do a search on Google for the Flash plugin. Last time I tried to get it from macromedia.com the site had a cow becuase I was using Konqueror.
After further investigation, using Netscape "Help" & "About Plugins", I was surprised to learn that Flash is installed, however it is not the most current and up to date version. I was successful in d/l'ing and installing Flash 6 from Marcomedia last night, and also obtained RealPlayer - Linux "flavor". Both programs are up and running at this time.
Question: Netscape preferences indicates Java is an option under their "Preferences" menu, although it is not indicated as "installed" when using their web-based Plug-In Manager. I do have this option enabled under Preferences, how can I verify it is installed and working?
Thanks for the earlier posts, appreciate your knowledge and interest.
You can get a j2re slackware package from the /extra directory at your nearest slackware-9.0 mirror and the flash 6 plugin and standalone players from http://macromedia.mplug.org/site_uh.html
