CUPS/HPLIP HP Deskjet 1050 not working/ not found.

Hi,

I'm trying to get HP DeskJet 1050 working on Slackware 13.1. When I plug it in to USB I can see it in lsusb. I've installed CUPS started it and went to add printer - but printer is not found. Ok, so I wanted to choose the series I have but 1050 is not listed in HP (is this driver missing?). So I went on to google on it and I got to HP website telling me to install HPLIP. Ok downloaded extracted and ./configure should run but it is not there (automatic script run has no Slackware listed). Can someone point at where I went wrong?

Thanks.

Isn't hplip installed by default during a "full" installation of Slackware?
If not you can find it in the appropriate directory here,

Here's the Open Printing Database listing:

They point you to their HP forums for more information.

This thread from another forum is about Slackware 12.x, but it might get you headed in the right direction.

I checked and you were right HPLIP comes with Slack... However for DeskJet 1050 j410 series I needed at least HPLIP 3.10.6 as points out this link.
So I've installed latest HPLIP and of we go :) I can print.
So far so good. Now I want to get my scanner to work. But when I ran xsane it tels me 'device busy' - I've searched for similar issue but non of the 'device busy' worked for me (mainly removing sane entry from config file).
Any tip on this one?

Do you have a standalone scanner?
I've found sane/xsane every disappointing. So much so I finally installed ms-XP in VirtualBox and the HP drivers into Xp and run that combination when I need to scan, which is every day.
Apparently, it depends on the chip in your scanner and how well it is supported by sane. As to "device busy"..... sorry, nothing comes to mind (at the moment, but I'm losing my mind in my age :) )

BTW, how did you install the printer?
From trial and error I've found using a browser, going to "localhost:631" and picking the hpijs driver works best.

I've installed it using hp-setup (also there were other issues like my user was not in 'lp' group and he could not access the device). Scanner is the same device it is all-in-one type of thing. I'll come back when I get the scanner sorted or have more questions :)

Can you scan as root?
