CUPS and Epson impact

After following instructions in LinuxPrinting.org CUPS Quick Start, when I invoke lp...

lp -d foo1 -o PageSize=Letter /etc/motd.......(as suggested) I get

lp: unable to print file: client-error-not-found

What does this mean? When I...

lp -d epson -o PageSize=Letter /etc/motd...... I get

request id is epson-20 (1 file(s))

but the printer does nothing. It feels like there should be a daemon running and there is not. But when I...

lpstat -t........ I get

scheduler is running
system default destination: ep/ep
members of class Epson:
ep
device for ep: epson:/dev/lp0
device for ep/ep: epson:/dev/lp0
ep accepting requests since Jan 01 00:00

Epson-19 root 1024 Sun Oct 5 15:29:37 2003
Epson-20 root 1024 Sun Oct 5 15:44:50 2003

Anyone have any ideas?

try running the cups webconfig at http://localhost:631/ (when the cups daemon is running, cupsd as root). since your output says 'printer ep/ep disabled since Jan 01 00:00 -' I think you may be able to 'enable' your printer in the web config.
