the easiest way is:
pkgtool -> setup -> services and place an X infront of rc.cups

this what your looking for?

To start on boot make the /etc/rc.d/rc.cups file executable. To start the daemon without reboot, type (as root)
Code:
  /etc/rc.d/rc.cups start

that worked... Thanks a bunch!
Another question:
I have a network setup with a Windows box running a Canon USB printer. i was able to go into CUPS admin via the web interface (localhost:631) and configure the printer to print. i can print a test page on the Windows printer but when i try to print using an application like Abiword it seems like its going to a local printer... i previously tried to add the same windows printer using lpadmin on the CLI and that's prolly what's causing the conflict. how do i allow all apps on gnome or kde to print directly to cups..

TIA

I can say for sure that in kde, you replace the pring command with kprinter

example:
mozilla = file -> print -> properties -> print command = kprinter

same principle appies to everyting else.

(not sure on gnome)

It sounds like you have a link issue. Your printing related command lpr, lpstat lp(etc.) is linked to lprng instead of cups.

Check out this post for the details of relinking it:
