Crystal audio sound problems

I am very new to linux. I recently installed Slack 9 and have not been able to get any sound to work on the system. I have onboard sound by means of a Crystal Audio cs4235-kq chip. I know of a module for cs4232 but have not had any succes with it.
I posted this question on the Linux-Newbie forum a while ago. I found the Slackware forum today and hope this might be a better place for it.
