creating a boot disk for slack 10
Hi all,
I recently downloaded Slack 10 ( .iso's). My problem is, if I try to burn them as iso's in windows I get an error and my cd burnng software ( VOB ) refuses to co-operate. So I gave up and used XCDRoast in Linux, which did not make them bootable....? ( which would be handy if they did ) I have read many articles on making a boot disk and it appears It would be pretty easy to create, if I already had a running Slack system which I dont. Can anyone help me on this.... Thanks in advance for your help...... deft |
Before giving up on the CD burning, try this free program: http://www.cdburnerxp.se/
I've been using it to burn ISO's as well as everything else with no problem. |
Thanks I will give it a go......

It says in your sig that you're using KDE.
Why not try K3B. I use it to burn isos all the time. |
Yep, K3b is about as easy as it gets when it comes to burning isos in Linux. I used to use XCDRoast but have been using K3b lately, with no complaints. :)

Thanks insyte, Ozar I will give it a go.....

Still not working.............?
Hi all,
Thanks for your help on this, but I am afraid nothing seems to work......... I downloaded K3B, all went well with install fired it up and away I went. The disk burned first time no problems.. except it still wont boot from it at when I reboot. I have stuck my windows XP disk and it booted fine..... AAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGRRHHHH!!!!. I kid you not I have about 6 Slack disk 1's and none of them are bootable  I have used K3B, XCDRoast, Nero, and another windows program creator XP or something like that. NONE of them have made the disk bootable :study: can anyone help..!!!! Would it be possible to download the bare boot image and put it on floppy..? I have heard of programs such as Rawrite ( or something ) which I am not exactly at home with. What I am trying to say is, is there an easy way round this without me using anymore of my already dwindling supply of cd's..... Am cracking up All help on this is greatly appreciated by me..... deft |

are you sure your BIOS is set to boot from CD?
|
Yip! The first boot device is cdrom, second 1st hardrive. I have successfully booted from a windows XP disk so its definetly set up right. I dont understand it....? I normally make the boot disk ( first cd ) in windows then finish the disks in Linux. Normally without a hitch ( as much as windows can be, normal that is ). I am now using K3b in KDE, it still does not make the 1st disk bootable....? I have downloaded the bare.i image from a Slack mirror site. I am under the impression that I can put it on a floppy and do the install that way..? So am heading that way now, if anybody knows what am doing wrong then please let me know as I would much prefer to have a bootable CD...
Many many thanks in advance.. deft. |
trey85stang sorry I never replied ( under pressure ) u said that I could make the boot disk from the first cd...? I dont quite understand that, how do I go about that...?

Two things:
1) Did you check the MD5s against the iso images to make sure the iso's are valid? 2) In the Linux world there are many options k3b being one of the easiest. Since I got rid of KDE though I just use mkisofs and cdrecord directly. In the Windows world however I would strongly recommend burnatonce http://www.burnatonce.com/ which uses mkisofs and cdrdao. |
Mephisto I thank you mate, it worked first time with burnatonce. God knows what was going on with all the other burners, Nero, XCDRoast, K3b and CreatorXP. None worked.
Again thanks mate. deft. |
