CPAN modules and -current
Hi all -
I have been tracking -current. Perhaps this is a bad idea for someone at my not-so-exalted level. ;^) Anyhoo, I installed the update to perl listed under Feb. 21 in the -current changelog: "d/perl-5.8.8-i486-5.tgz: Added XML::Simple perl module for icon-naming-utils." ... and I have found that it (I can't think what else would have done it) has mucked up the modules I have installed under CPAN. Not sure how else to characterize it ... but even my version of the CPAN module itself has gotten knocked back (I had pretty faithfully kept up to date and installed the latest version when prompted by CPAN). Am wondering whether there is any way to recover from this. I have tried to re-install a number of modules (including CPAN) but they are now throwing errors and not installing correctly. It is a mystery to me whether this indicates a bug somewhere or just my own abundant stupidity (I lean towards the latter). Thanks in advance for any insights. Regards, Glenn |
Having no experience in this area, I'd be reluctant to offer advice other than don't be so self depreciating, you know more than some and less than others, that's it for all of us and experience is both the aggregate of what you have learned plus the sum total of all your mistakes.
The fact that you use Slackware and Debian indicates your a cut above the masses of point and clickers on any OS. Of course it doesn't make you better than any of them. |
thanks for not letting that past

What are the errors?

Which version of Perl did you update 5.8.8 from? It may be that all your old 5.8.7 mods are in the 5.8.7 folder while new ones will be put into 5.8.8. Perl 5.8.8 probably can't find the old ones.

I should stop updating things without thinking about it. |

The relevant parts will be those that surround the first fatal error message. Warnings may also be relevant, but they may not be. If in doubt, post the entire output. Cut-n-paste may be the only way. (Are you running this in a terminal or on the console without X?)

In case you hadn't noticed, this is fixed in latest -current.
Sorry for the inconvenience, but at least it's fixed now. :) |
