Sorry I assumed you were getting the problem as a user, but the same applies if you are root, just replace /home/cam from above with /root (this is root's home).
However, if you have broken packages, get that sorted out first.Maybe this will solve the problem and you won't need the instructions from above. You dont say how you arrived at the conclusion that kdelibs is broken, but I assume you have a good reason for thinking that.
I would also compare the kde packages that you have in /var/log/packages with the kde directory on slackware's site, just to make sure you have everything. (actually some of the packages are optional, but its not worth confusing the issue)
I got my ISO from the slackware website, but I have reason to believe that parts of it are broken. I wonder if using the ISO from LinuxISO.org would yield a different response? I can pretty much gaurantee that a reinstall won't help, as I've done that a couple times, with the same result. I don't know how to install KDE from the console though, so that's what I am slowly working towards.
If anybody knows if the ISOs from LinuxISO.org and Slackware.org are different, I would be very happy to receive that information.
I've been looking more closely, as far as I can tell:
1. None of the packages in the Gnome folder have been loaded, despite being selected, when I try and access them through "pkgtool" it kicks me back out.
2. The qt package has not been loaded, and the same thing happens. In fact when I tried to copy it manually into my /home/amos I get a read error.
3. When I call startx I get various messages, but there are a number which refer to libqt-"something or other".
I've got another version of Slackware 9, but this one is on a PCPLUS DVD, and requires me to burn it to a CDROM, guess which machine my burner's on .
Ah well, its about time I learnt how to burn ISOs from the command line, if that doesn't work then I'm scuppered for now as I have a 56K dialup connection.
I've been experiencing the same thing with the gnome folder, and pkgtool kicking me out. I'll download a different ISO, and if it works, I'll tell you about it ok!
The other ISO (from http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=17) worked beautifully. I was in KDE in seconds, with a perfectly functioning mouse and the glory of knowing that B$G's days on my computer are now numbered. Amos, try downloading the same ISO I just did - I think it'll work wonders.
Thanks everyone,
Cam
*Now - on to getting an internet connection - but that's for another thread*
Biggest problem with that is I'm on a dialup connection!
Will try and work out a way to burn the PCPLUS ISO, but both Linux Format (which is the version I've been trying to install) and PCPLUS are part of the same Magazine Group, so I'm wondering whether they're both going to have used the same original ISO. Time to experiment I think.
Right I've burnt the image from the PCPlus Cover Disk, and got it working, this version however doesn't contain the KDEI or the K folders, can I take them from any location or do they have to be Slackware 9.0 specific?
Also I guess its time to read "The Book" as I need to work out how to configure various bits.
