Converting a *.tar.gz to a *.tgz

Hi!
I wanted to know how to convert, say, foo.tar.gz to foo.tgz so that it is able to be installed using KPackage. Please Help. Thanks

install the program called "checkinstall" it is found in disc2 of slackware11

after installing, do the reqular routine installing a program from source..

"tar -zxvf <program_name>.<version>.<arc>.tar.gz"

"cd <program_name>.<version>"

"./configure"

"make"

"sudo checkinstall"

"checkinstall" will make a .tgz binary like <program_name>.<version>.<arch>.tgz

you have to provide a description though..

Another possibility is just using the src2pkg command:

sudo root
src2pkg foo.tar.gz

The ready Slackwate packages is located it /tmp
Check the README file of foo.tar.gz to see if any extra arguments should be passed to the ./cofigure script. If so the command is
src2pkg -e '--some-argument' foo.tar.gz

Another possibility is just writing a SlackBuild and building it. Your SlackBuild calls makepkg(8) and you're done.

please remove sudo entries in slckware. i think this will confuse newbees

tar.gz (source tarrballs) and tgz (slackware pkg) aer different ones. for our personal use, i will go for the checkinstall method as ritziyap said.
instead of ./configure make make install, use
./configure make checkinstall
