Considering Xorg, Slack favors Xorg over Xfree
Well it is offical....

Well if you read many topics here at the forum than it would have been seen that just this week ppl where discussing not using xorg as it was "not" an offical slackware package. It is obvious that this is not NEWS to all. I am at the forum daily and have not seen this. That is why I posted it....

Xorg gives worse FPS performance than XFre86 so ...........I'll stick with XFree thank you.......

I use xorg on 2 different machines both are intel P2s one a 450mhz w/GeForce MX400 (new), the other 333mhz w/Cirrus logic Laguna GL5465 ob, each have a IBM E74 monitor. I use the Nvidia driver from Nvidia for the G and the Xorg driver for the CL. Both displays are crisper than when I was using Xfree. Though I am not happy with the Nvidia as it will not give me all modes available even when listed in the xorg.conf. The older Cirrus was not even usable with Xfree listing only 2 screen modes even when 8 where configured in. Under Xorg I have 8 screen modes for the Nvidia and 12 for the Cirrus.
Testing other modes xorg is fast on both machines, neither does it require much memory, If ppl are havin' problems with xorg I tend to lean toward a config issue. There are some minor configure variations in xorg over Xfree and you must do these and REMOVE XFree totally from your system BY HAND after xorg has been installed and updated. Xorg removes much of the XFree wares but does leave some that it does not configure out. That is where human interaction comes in. Now ppl may fuss "oh another group trying to make wares for the unix community" that is a NO xorg ware are the same wares as XFree with the questionable license wares removed and rewritten. -------------- Source = http://freedesktop.org/XOrg About the X11R6.7.0 Release The X.Org repository is based on XFree86 4.4 RC2. Just before its 4.4 release, XFree86 adopted a new license possibly incompatible with the GPL. True... As I run a "slack 9.1+ modified" as I tend to call it anyway. It is not a pure slack 9.1 install nor is it a -current and it is not really between the 2.
My kernels are based on 2.4.26 and patched for custom PVM/MPI support. Many of the base installed utils have to be built for the kernel specifically as they will only run on "stock" kernels. LOL something that is going on in the background right now... This can be a pain as any changes required to my kernels require several local re-makes of several things. So I keep sources on-hand for the various things that require it. Given that I usually go and get the latest stable versions available which leads me to a "modified slack version" not stock, not current and not in between. My machines are quite stable well at least the 3 Dragon servers are, the nodes can be a pain in the rear flashing proms and all... Nodes are first tested with boot prom images on a floppy prior to flashin' network proms which can be a bit tricky... This works good for me as it is required for what I am doing but does demand dedication and LOL is likein to a fulltime job. |
