connect digital camera to laptop with SlackWare 8

Any idea on how to connect the digital camera Olympus C-420L to the SlackWare 8 on the laptop IBM ThinkPad 760 EL?

I would like to download images to laptop via serial port + cable or via FlashPath 3.5 adaptor.

Since I am new to Linux I can not figure out how to do it, despite my efforts to find a way.
