configuration files
Hi guys... I asked this question (as part of a bigger list) in the newbie forum too, but I figured this forum is the place I should ask it:
Does anyone know of a _complete_ list of Slackware configuration files (or menu driven utilities that edit them), what they do, how they can be user-overriden and where they are? I'm so extremely confused... I realise that these conf files are the thing that makes linux so transparent and configurable, but since they're scattered all around and since all distro's use different conf files... you know... :newbie: |
I can't give you a complete list of all config files, but here are the 3 kinds of startup files.
Systemwide: /etc/profile Login Initialization: .profile Shell Initialization: .bashrc |
/etc
/home/$USER |
Quote from Understanding Linux configuration files:
"Is there a standard configuration file format in Linux? In a word, no. Users who are new to Linux (rightly) feel frustrated that each configuration file looks like a new challenge to figure out. In Linux each programmer is free to choose the configuration file format he or she prefers. Format options range from the /etc/shells file, which contains a list of possible shells separated by a newline, to Apache's complex /etc/httpd.conf file." So I guess you will have to cope with them when you will need them. You can find the location and a short description, though, for the most "popular" of them at the link above. :newbie: too |

EDIT: btw, I just got sound to work for other users than root! say Hurray! I'm getting the hang of this :) |
