compiling programs on an smp pc to use on non smp pc

a stupid question im sure but i will still ask it, seeing as when you compile a program if you have made a custom kernel it picks it up as 486 or 686.

if i make a program on a pc where i have a custom 2.6.219smp kernel and go to use that same program on another pc with only 1 cpu will it cause issues or should it run just fine - as i dont really wanna do 2 compiles of each prog

You needn't worry about programs. gcc won't (can't) make a program
dependent on SMP. Only the architecture matters.

ok i know this is bumping up and old thread but i have a slight different angle on this question now - seeing as i have bought myself an nforce board with an amd athlon 64 x2 can i use the packages i made on the p4 smp box or will i need to make new packages baring in mind i have made a custom kernel using K8 option in 2.6.18.8 kernel

I think you can do it by specifying the architecture you are compiling for, and the target and host.

I don't think you can run packages you already made that were compiled specifically for a pentium4. But if they are generic enough they may run. What compile flags did you use ?

atm none yet - still a bit rusty after my little break but from what i have seen from some of the configure logs they are all saying they are building for i686 - so i think i should be able to get away with it for now untill i decide i am confident enough to make custom and tuned up packages, shouldnt be too hard i can make packages for main pc and use them on laptop even if it is a smp box they were made from, and i wouldnt have thought it would take long to do the same on the amd box
