compiling kernel for SATA support

dear all,

i have a very basic question: i compiled my kernel 2.6.10 and got the famous 'kernel panic - not syncing VFS, cannot open root device' error.

after reading some posts here, i guess this is due to the fact that i use sata.i boot image to install slackware, and my recompile just doesn't do.

could someone point me in the right directions of which options in the make menuconfig options to ensure:

1. SATA is supported;
2. my disk is in reiserfs: do i need to select it, or mod it in the settings?

thank you...

aj.

You must compile in your root disk's FS.
As for the SATA, I'm not sure ;(

1. If you want sata support you need to have SCSI in your kernel first. (scsi disk and scsi generic)
It is under Device drivers->SCSI device support.

Then in SCSI Low Level Drivers, make sure that Serial ATA is <*> (not as a module or <M>) and that your chipset is also enabled.

Recompile your kernel and reboot.

2. if you want reiser fs in your kernel you need to go to File systems and enable Reiserfs support (must not be a module or else your kernel will not boot)
