compiling kernel & checkinstall


can i use checkinstall at the end of the kernel compilation process rather than make install, make modules_install ... or whatever?
i just tried it, but it didnt seem to work...
but maybe i did it wrong, i dont know

No, you can't ... the only make-target that checkinstall
evaluates is "make install". You'll still have to run "make
modules_install" manually beforehand (or modify the
checkinstall script accordingly).

This isn't strictly true. The following is from the checkinstall README:

It is important to note that checkinstall can keep track of files modified by
any command line, not just a "make install". You can create your own
installation script with lots of command in it and then have checkinstall track
them for you.
However, it probably wouldn't do much good to run 'checkinstall make modules_install', since installing/removing the 'package' would still wipe out any previous modules.
