compare mplayer installation notes

My user account, more and more frequently, when I try to view a movie, mplayer
just 'disapears'. After I first installed it, it worked just fine for some time, but the
problem has been getting progressivly worse, and now mplayer is basically
unusable. Works a bit better if I am root - but I'm very seldom root. I am contemplating
removing it and installing it again. I am going to post my install notes on it - I would
love some feedback / ideas / other methods.

1- extract all-20040706 (codecs) and put them into /usr/local/lib/codecs

2- extract wm-dlls.zip (additional windows codecs) and put them into /usr/local/lib/codecs
(not sure where I got this file, but I still have it)

3- install ffmpeg-0.4.8-i486
(not necessary, I know, but this is according to my notes)

4 - extract MPlyaer-1.0pre5 and type:
/.configure --enable-gui
make
make install

5. extract and copy skins to /usr/local/share/mplayer/Skin/defualt/

6. extract and copy fonts to /usr/local/share/mplayer/fonts

7. create desktop link to /usr/local/bin/gmplayer

I know I have better notes on what I did, but I can't find them. How much does
this differ from your installation method?
Thanks in advance -tw

1. Extract all-20040706 to /usr/lib/codecs
2. Omit this step. I don't have this file.
3. Omit this step.
4. ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-gui && make && su -c "checkinstall"
Works for me.

1. Extract all-20040706 to /usr/local/lib/codecs
2. Unpack MPlayer-1.0pre5
3.
/.configure --enable-gui
make
make install

I prefer let the prefix as default (/usr/local)
