choosing a Slackware Mirror

How does one go about finding a "Local SlackwareMirror"?
I live In the USA NE, and have skimmed through the Slackware Mirror list, though USA is as local as i can narrow it down.

Secondly, after selecting a local slackware mirror, what exactly is "uncommenting"?

Thanks.

ps. Being very new to slackware and linux, It's been fun using the SlackDocs site & resources (and helpful obviously), and at the same time reading through the thread where it first took /

After you find a mirror you need to remove the # from in front of it.

For example open up /etc/slackpkg/mirrors in a text editor and remove the # from only one mirror.

# ftp://mirror.cs.princeton.edu/pub/mi...ckware64-14.1/
becomes:
ftp://mirror.cs.princeton.edu/pub/mi...ckware64-14.1/

A # on a script/code file "tells" the computer that the line is not code, it is a comment. Uncommenting it would be removing the #.

hey thanks. that makes sense. more sense then deleting every other entry :P

how a local mirror? The united states is big. How do i select a mirror that is closer to me, or does it matter?

Just choose any of the US mirrors and you should be fine

I don't think it matters too much which mirror you select. I live in Northern Canada and I like this USA mirror.

Code:

ftp://ftp.osuosl.org/.2/slackware/slackware-14.1/

I always use:

Code:

ftp://ftp.oregonstate.edu/pub/slackware/slackware-14.1

That's what I'm using. The osuosl link is the Oregon State University Open Source Lab, the same organization I think. Good stuff. :)

OSU, ftw! Great school, great campus, great Linux community. It's about a 1/2 hour drive from me. The mirror I use as well, and for me, it truly is local. OSUOSL is a great resource for the open source community.

what about testing mirrors for speed (one at a time or en masse)? like ping, or traceroute?

Or is asking for recommendations, and trying them out over time, just about the extent of it.

thanksagain

I work in the Philadelphia, PA area, yet I use the OSUOSL mirror because it is very fast and has great bandwidth capacity, FWIW.

Many of the mirrors are educational institutions. If you know your college abbreviations, you can often figure out the mirror.

OSUOSL is Ohio State, carroll.cac.psu.edu is Penn State, lug.udel.edu is the University of Delaware, and so on. For the others, a whois might provide an answer:

Code:

whois xmission.com

(major snippage)

Registrant Organization: XMission
Registrant Street: 51 East 400 South Suite #200
Registrant City: Salt Lake City
Registrant State/Province: UT

(more snippage)

I usually use Ohio State or PSU because they work very nicely.
