If I got you right, you're trying to build a package. A guide for building Slackware packages can be found at http://www.linuxpackages.net/howto.p...=Package+Howto.
To answer your question, the command for just building a *tgz package is makepkg. See manpages for details :-)
for a time I was using a test version of checkinstall (checkinstall-1.6.0-test3 I think) before I reverted to the version installed as part of slackware.
The test version didn't install by default, it just built the package.
