Changing display/unable to connect to internet with Slackware 9.1

I already have Mandrake up and running, but recently decided to try another distro out and went for Slackware. I have a couple of problems that I hope one of you wonderful people can help me with... (flattery gets you everywhere!)
Firstly...
At first, I was getting a blank screen when selecting 'startx'. Had a poke around the forums, and it seemed I had to run xf86config, which I did, and got the following:
Quote:

fatal 1 error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining
So, I ran xfree86setup, despite one thread I read warning me not to, and... it worked! The only drawback is that the display defaults to 640x480, and all further attempts to run xf86config met with the same message as above. It's not a major problem, but I would like to run Slack at 1024x768, which my monitor is perfectly happy with in Mandrake and XP. Any ideas?
Secondly...
When I first installed Mandrake, I was unable to connect to the internet, but after asking here, sorted it by installing a driver from the nVidia web site. I had the same problem with Slackware, so went back and got the appropriate RPM, installed it - still nothing. A few threads on this site suggested running netconfig, which I did, and lo and behold... nothing! Anything else I should be trying?

as for x, you may want to try xf86cfg, it's a graphical configuration utility that attemps to find as much as it can automatically.

what type of internet connection, modem, etc..

I'll try xf86cfg next time I'm in Slackware.
As for the internet connection, I'm using a Webstar cable modem with an nVidia ethernet card - as I said, I had to download the drivers when I installed Mandrake and can't work out why doing the same thing doesn't solve it with Slackware...

I had a go at xf86cfg - changed the monitor settings to just about every reasonable combination, then the config file saved and.. it went back to 640x480 each time. Most odd.

try downloading the source driver from nvidia site. extract it and then compile it, that should work.

the 640 to 480 default gave me trouble with slack and xf86cfg, till i figured a trick to it.. do you have cd 2, the live boot cd? if so try booting up that install and see if x works.. you may also try using the frambuffer x server untill you can get it working right with higher resolutions..

I would compile the driver, but I'm a noob and don't want to run before I can walk (from the research I've done it seems like something to learn a while down the line)... I would have thought installing the RPM would have done it, or does Slackware not like RPMs?
Just tried booting from the CD, and I got "command not recognised" with startx and xf86cfg. Is there a different command I should be entering?

As it is working, back up your XF86Config file, then run xf86config again (on terminal of course) and take care when the menu takes you to resolution settings. You will have four different choices, respectively for 8, 16 24 bits (the fourth will take you out of resolution setting) and it will be asked you if you want to modify the resolution of your screen.
Choose modifying 1 and then select 432 as choice and same for point 2 and 3.
Don't choose enlarge the sceen area option.
Then choose 4 and go on
This (hoping is clear enough) will set the resolution for each stage first to 1024x768 and if not compatible to 800x600 and so on
Ciao

Excellent - that sorted it! Thanks!
Now all I need to do is figure out why it's not connecting to the internet, and why there's no sound (which I've just found out!) and I'll be away...
