cdrom, no /dev/cdrom : kernel modules?

I have fouled up my cdrom. I compiled 2.6.22 trying to be as modular as possible but now can't get my system to recognize the cdrom.

my setup:

dell d820 laptop
core duo
SATA hard drive - ICH7
slackware 11
linux 2.6.22

dmesg (truncated):

I was thinking perhaps I made things too modular, so I made an initrd with
Code:
insmod /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/ide-core.ko
insmod /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/cdrom.ko
insmod /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/ide-cd.ko
insmod /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/piix.ko
insmod /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/pktcdvd.ko
which are all the cdrom modules I know of. they are all loaded:
Code:

I tried this:
Code:
# cdrecord -scanbus | grep CDRW
cdrecord: Warning: Running on Linux-2.6.22
cdrecord: There are unsettled issues with Linux-2.5 and newer.
cdrecord: If you have unexpected problems, please try Linux-2.4 or Solaris.
Linux sg driver version: 3.5.34
        1,0,0 100) 'TSSTcorp' 'CDRW/DVD TSL462C' 'DE01' Removable CD-ROM
so its like its there.. but where?
any pointers?

there is no /dev/hd* , /dev/cdr* , or /dev/sc* right now. this drive worked fine with a bigger (everything compiled in ) kernel.

so it would be fantastic if anyone has ANY ideas from this.. ? the biggest difference I notice is that with my previous kernel the E-IDE driver was apparently used? I'll try re-compiling I guess.

solved

here I go answering my own question, and asking another.

what I did:
1. kernel
Code:
<M> ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support  --->
    <M> Enhanced IDE/MFM/RLL disk/cdrom/tape/floppy support
<M> Include IDE/ATA-2 DISK support [*] IDE ACPI support[*] PNP EIDE support[*] PCI IDE chipset support
<M> Generic PCI IDE Chipset Support[*] Generic PCI bus-master DMA support
SCSI device support  --->
    <*> SCSI disk support
    <*> SCSI CDROM support
    <*> SCSI generic support
<*> Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers --->
    <*> Intel ESB, ICH, PIIX3, PIIX4 PATA/SATA support
    <M> Intel PATA MPIIX support
<M> Intel PATA old PIIX support
I'm not certain that the SCSI CD support is required built in, perhaps I'll try as a module later.

2. edit /boot/grub/menu.list
Code:
title 2.6.22
kernel (hd0,2)/bzImage-2.6.22 root=/dev/sda9 resume=/dev/sda6 vga=0x318 video=vesafb,ywrap,mtrr quiet pci="assign-busses,routeirq" irqpoll combined_mode=libata libata.atapi_enabled=1 ro
initrd (hd0,2)/initrd.gz
I'm not certain the irqpoll / routirq is required for this lappy, but I'm too lazy to figure out right now.

anyways, these steps get me /dev/sr0 as my cdrom.

A new question: I'm not sure if thats better/worse than the old way it showed up as /dev/hd? (iirc)
