As tuttle noticed, that "no dma" is puzzling. My suggestion is to take another look at your kernel configuration to see if something is amiss. For reference, that a look at the sample configuration file you can find here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...icle&artid=408
I used that as a base for my kernel configuration and it worked well, although yours will be a liitle different. Be sure to see if your chipset is enabled, and of course, dma.
I have already recompiled the kernel exactly to fit my box. There is nothing else I can select there. There are no other drivers to select. I have all the proper drivers already selected... Im realy thinknig that this is a firmware problem... I updated to firmware 1.8f so I could burn DVD that support 1x-4x and now my CDs are beening burned at 4 speed... but Like I posted, cdrecorder shows that my CD have a 10x max speed, and shows that was to be 16x. But even at 10x I get error... :/
well, I will try to find a previous version, but for what I saw in google, version 1.8e is not a good version. so I think I have to find 1.8d to download... or 1.7? I realy dont know... I will give a search right now.
Or there is something very wrong or Im very out of luck.

This drive will come with the mounting rails and the front panel for the SONY PCG-GRT series laptops, for other type of laptops you will have to get different mounting devices and front panel. The SONY DVD+/-RW DW-U50A is compatible with all modern laptops, with 12.5 mm drives, it is the buyer's responsibility to determine that your laptop has a 12.5 mm drive. Please refer to your Service Manual or ask a Specialist.
I realy dont think they are going to update this drive anymore. The 1.8f was a HP need, so they could make the users stop anoyng with DVD burning...
Look to the message that the good support from HP gave-me, note that they gave me exactly the same link for the same driver, for the same version that I already have. =/

problem_description : After updating the firmware of my CD/DVD-RW drive
model Sony DW-P50A to version 1.8f Im unable to burn CDs at more them
4x. The right speed, and the speed that I was used to burn before was
16x CD and 4x for CDRW. The reason to upgrade the firmware was because I
was not able to burn DVDs. So after reading a lot in google I found in
many places that to be able to burn 4x DVDs I had to upgrade my
firmware. But now I only can burn at 4x CDRW and continue without being
able to burn DVDs. Im trying to find some way to downgrade the firmware,
or maybe someother solution. Im asking to HP for this solution because I
have searched this for about one month and no solution was find, I just
want to be able to burn at 16x again.

I know it's a pain in the ain* but could you try burning under a 2.4 kernel just to see if anything different happens? If you do, please use the cdrecord method we tried earlier and post any interesting output.
tomorrow I will buy a cd to test in the orignal 2.4 kernel that came with slack. I tryed in windows before send the message to HP and have problems. Considering that my windows was never formated (It was, but Im counting from the last time I burned at 16x) so I realy think the firmware ruinned my drive. :/
If no good result happen on 2.4 I will search for a new drive solution, like changing the orignal Sony drive of my notebook for another or buying an external. I think a external will be less expensive... :/
