CD-DVD drive not detected in K3B

Hello,

I am using Slackware 12. My cd-dvd drive is bot detected when i run k3b. The error message i get is

No CD/DVD writer found.
K3b did not find an optical writing device in your system. Thus, you will not be able to burn CDs or DVDs. However, you can still use other K3b features like audio track extraction or audio transcoding or ISO9660 image creation.

Did you try Settings > Configure K3B > Devices > Add Device?

Make sure you have proper permissions on the device also.

Hi Warun,

Could you post your /etc/fstab file to see how it looks and how you have things setup in your system?

The fstab won't necessarily help as CD/DVD mounting is handled by hal by default in Slackware 12.0 and later. I have a similar problem on my new machine. If I don't keep a disc in my DVD drive and DVD writer, then hal or udev lose track of them after a while. This did not happen in my old machine. The DVD drive and DVD writer are from the old machine, which also ran Slackware 12.1. I suspect a quirk in the implementation of ACPI in the Asus motherboard

EDIT: I am putting my optical drives in my fstab. I will report if this helps.

Hi,

You should make sure your users are in the following groups; 'floppy audio video cdrom plugdev'.

edit: you can check to see if the device was detected from the cli;

~#dmesg |grep -i cdrom
~#dmesg |grep -i hd*

Thanks, but in my case they already are:
Code:
bash-3.1$ groups
users lp wheel floppy audio video cdrom games plugdev power scanner
Also, when I said udev loses track of the optical devices after a while, that is exactly what appears to happen. If there is no disc in them, they don't show up in lspci and even dmesg shows nothing. As long as I have a disc in them, that doesn't happen.

This happens whether they are mounted by hal or in the fstab. I think they dont wake up after going into powersaving/sleep mode.
