Realtek 8187B seems to work now...

The linux driver for Realtex 8187B available at

http://www.datanorth.net/~cuervo/blo...ista/#comments

compiles with many warnings, but Knetworkmanager now shows the wireless network and the one locked network that I can reach from here. For now I consider this great success. One problem is that the light on the laptop edge which shows wireless active is still off, but this seems minor at this point. Thanks datanorth!

I guess I jumped the gun a bit on declaring victory! At that point I did see a local network show up in knetworkmanager but couldn't connect since it was pw protected. This afternoon I went to a shop where there were several available networks, but despite about an hour of trying things I couldn't get knetworkmanager to show any networks at all. According to iwlist, the card was working and could see many networks but I couldn't get the gui to show them. Any ideas??

This shows that I the card was up and working:

Code:
blake@blake-laptop:/etc/init.d$ sudo iwlist wlan0 scanning
wlan0 Scan completed :

Here's some system log info which seems to show problems with the driver (I think this corresponds to running /etc/init.d/networking restart.

According to iwlist, the card was working and could see many networks but I couldn't get the gui to show them. Any ideas??

This shows that I the card was up and working:

Here's some system log info which seems to show problems with the driver (I think this corresponds to running /etc/init.d/networking restart.

Code:
Nov 3 15:32:57 blake-laptop kernel: [ 292.000000] r8187: no version for "ieee80211_reset_queue" found: kernel tainted.
Hmm. That's odd. Is ieee80211-rtl module being OFP? May want to recompile the iee80211* drivers (just ./makedrv).

Try running wlan0up, then iwconfig/dhclient by hand.

2.6.27 kernel has support for Realtek 8187b

If you are willing to do so, compiling and installing a new kernel should solve all your problems with the rtl8187b.

I've got the realtek windows drivers for the chip and installed ndiswrapper ( sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper-common ndiswrapper-utils-1.9).

Now, %% sudo ndiswrapper -i net8187b.inf

works, but when checking via diswrapper -l, it returns

driver installed

but NOT displaying that it actually connected to the device... this pattern is the same regardless of the driver OS version (i.e. XP, vs Vista86, vs Win2000).
IM HAVING THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM!
lets hope reading on tells me more...
