cant download slack via ftp http rsync or bit torrent !!!
 

i wanted to try a different linux distro, ive been with redhat / fedora for years.

and with the new release of slackware 10, it seemed a good time....

HOWEVER....
i just cant download the thing !

i tried to download the slack packages with wgets recursive download function....
it always exists with file or directory not found, but pointing my web browser at the url shows that it infact does exist.

so i decided to try the iso download, no official mirrors house the iso's for slack 10.
but i found a list of un0official mirrors that do...
all of which are maxed out, timeing out, or dont allow public access.

ohh, and bit torrent runs at 2kbps..... WAAAAY too slow !
i hav an internet connection capable of 70kbps.

what am i doing wrong !

ecdit: and the official servers dont even have slackware-10 !
slackware is a pain the the hard drive and ive not even started yet

I don't know why you are not getting speed with bittorrent. Right now, I am downloading the ISOs with my max speed (140KB/s). Are you behind a firewall? You will have to wait for some more time for the ISO images to come to the mirrors. Slackware is released by a small group of people and we should appreciate their effort.

Leep your BT open as the more people with BT running the faster it will get. That is how BT works.
Ive been watching a slow but steady increase in D/L sped of BT over the past hour. The best you can do is keep your D/L open and plead with everyone else to do the same.

Anyone have a better list of mirrors? Cause the ones from slackware.com just plain fscking suck. i e-mailed them about the lack of maintenence and noone replied. i think it's BS... anyone have some good RELIABLE mirrors to download from??

there are too many connections... the server cant handle them.

http is not a permenent connection protocol.. just hit the refresh button, ull get it in 2 or 3 attempts.

im using bit torrrent and running at a pathetic 25kbps.
oh well....

I started my BT session last night and when I left for work this morning both iso's were around 50%.
(kinda slow, but I'm patient)
I plan on leaving it up for (at least) the next few days too just to help keep others going ;)

As said before, everyone would benefit from more bittorrent users.

I downloaded d1 and d2 in about 5 hours, I have left my torrents active overnight as by 10 hours I had only reached a up/down ratio of 0.6.
I see around 1300 peers in the swarm.

If it is that slow, you might check to make sure your ports if running NAt are open for bittorrent. Mine was running really slow and then I found out about this. Now I am running at 50 k/s.

I wasn't around to monitor the speed very much. When I started the first d/l (disc 1) it was around 40-50K, then it dropped when I started the second on. They are now running simultaneously, so it's a bit slower between the two of them. I also figure that the amount currently being uploaded is limiting my download speed (asymmetric connection), but like I said before, I'm not in a huge hurry. They'll be done by the time I get home from work.

Also, once it got started, my up/down ratio has been around 2:1. There are plenty of people out there pulling from my connection. I've been watching via netstat.

qwijibow, read in the bittorrent manuals, you've to open some ports in the firewall (i'm pretty sure you've one) to get full speed.

you can limit the bandwidth of uploads. they say to shoot for 80% of your upload limit. that certainly helped me.

I remember seeing that in the FAQ too, I just ssh'ed into my box and one is complete, the other is almost. No worries now I guess. ;)

Well it seems to me that Slack is far more popular then assumed. Every site I have been by has either been maxed on users are have so many connected that they are SLOOOOWWW... I have not tried bt as I am not comfortable with "P2P" type warez running on my systems. The rule of the house for my kids is if you want to run "P2P" warez then you do so at your own risk and you will be outside the hardened firewall in the DMZ.

So I will order the disk and support the cause.... Fed-ex is just the next day and if I downloaded the isos ot would still be the next day...
