cannot start Linux

I log in as root, all ok with the password, but i canoot go on when it says name@root:/#... I have to write something there, and i do not know what. I have slackware 9.0. The computer is:
Pentium 4 2400 Hz, 1 Gb Memory, 120 GB Hard.

Configure X with the "xf86config" command. After you are finished with that, just enter the command "startx".

Or, just type "startx" and see if it works. If not, type "xf86config", fill stuff in, and *then* type "startx".

Before all that, though, I recommend adding a regular, non-root user (if you haven't done so already). To do so, type

adduser

at the command prompt, and follow directions.
