Cannot sequentially press Alt key then menu accelerator, must press both concurrently

In KDE3 and Trinity users are able to sequentially press the Alt key and then press the menu accelerator/mnemonic key. In KDE 4.10.1 I have been unable to find a way to do that and instead must press both keys concurrently.

Is there a setting to allow sequential pressing?

Thanks. :)

I tested the Sticky key route but that does not work the same way. Even after disabling the children options and only enabling sticky keys, odd things happen because any modifier key is treated as sticky. Some weird things happened too, such as needing to press the Delete key twice and Num Lock stopped working. I don't know what is up with that. Could be my use case, could be a bug, could be PEBKAC. Regardless, I haven't yet found a way to allow sequential pressing of the keys like in KDE3/Trinity.
