cannot see png images in firefox

My wife's laptop cannot (anymore) display png impages. For example, the image at the default firefox/google page http://www.google.com/firefox?client...en-US:official does not display in firefox, but does display in opera. The image at www.google.com, which is a gif, displays fine. She believes that this started happening when I upgraded xfce to 4.6. I started with a fresh .config directory, and with a fresh .mozilla directory, to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Thanks,
Brian

any plugins installed in firefox ?

BCarey 04-26-2009 10:15 AM

No, I started with an empty .mozilla directory to test.

Does it work with another browser?

BCarey 04-26-2009 10:24 AM

Yes, as I mentioned, they display in opera.

That won't have disabled "system wide" plugins installed in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins (or ../lib64/... if you're using a 64-bit distribution). Look at about: plugins (<alt>-P) on her system to see what's there.

I compared hers to mine, and they are identical except that I have a couple of helix plugins on mine.

I recently had a similar experience...

In my case I installed Slackware 12.1 on my wife's desktop and everything was working fine. Then I installed Firefox 3 on all our 12.1 boxen and hers quit displaying certain images. Most notably, graphics all displayed as black boxes on many news sites and images posted to some of her forums were missing. They worked in FF2 and in Opera but not FF3.

In her case the fix turned out to be to install a more recent video driver (hers is older Nvidia TNT2) and tweak the X configs accordingly.

If you are a stumped as I was at the time, have a look at her drivers and X config.

You can also try upgrading FF.

awesome, astrogeek, that was the solution. Indeed I was using the nv driver, and changing to the nvidia drivers (using the builds on slackbuilds.org) fixed it up.

I am curious why older FF and opera worked okay, but at least it works.

Thanks to all who responded.

Excellent! I too, used the SBo build script, so thanks to them too! I found it a little baffling as it was very 'selective', some worked and others did not. Glad it worked for you too!

And Thanks for the THANKS!

This happens to me aswell using slackware 12.2 and fireFox 3.0.4-3.0.9 . I have and ATI card and half of the images are filled in by black boxes on any given web page. As soon as install the non-free drivers it fixes the problem. And since I installed Slack 5 times in the last two weeks I can reproduce this problem every time.
