Unhappy Cannot see beyond ISP and DNS servers with Slackware 4.0

I installed Slackware 4.0 disksets A and N, plus the Lynx text browser, on an old 386 laptop. Nothing else. I have configured ppp (correctly - many times!) and can dial and connect to my ISP using PAP. However, I cannot see beyond the ISP. I can ping the ISP and the DNS servers, but absolutely nothing else. All relevant files (/etc/resolv.conf, /etc/ppp/options) have been checked and correct. ifconfig and route give the correct information. I am absolutely stumped. It is not a file permission problem - I connected as root (bad move I know, but I needed to check), still no go. Windows 98 connection to the same ISP account works fine. I am using the default kernel from the bare.i disk. There are no error messages in /var/log/messages except "host not found". Thanking in advance for your help, Vinref.

The problem sounds a default gateway issue since you are able to ping the neighbors only. Be sure to check in your route table if the default route entry was added by the ppp daemon. The pppd deamon needs the option defaultroute, either in the startup script or in the options file. If it is there, then I would recommend to try and build an udated pppd say to version 4 and try again.

Perhaps it has been of some help.
