As well as usb-storage you also need scsi-disk and scsi-generic support in kernel

Does your thumbdrive have a little status light? Does it turn on? It might be some physical connection issue, the front ports might be bad.
Yes, when I insert the device into the usb port, there is a blue LED that flashes twice. And that is it...

I think it should stay on. If you fiddle a bit and hold it in just the right place, does the light stay on and does the device work?

Well I just put my thumbdrive in Slackware 10.2 laptop, and was able to mount, remove files, and unmount it with no problems. I did this just to see how the led would act/react.

When I plug it into the usb port, the light on the thumbdrive doesn't come on, but when doing the actions above, then it would flash...

I also know my thumbdrive works ok with WinXP, cause I have documents that I access all of the time at work with it.

I've also put the thumbdrive back into my Slackware 10.2 desktop and played with it to see what would happen. The led did not stay on...

thanks again

Hmm, do you have access to other brands? Some may do better than others. I have a SanDisk, and it is supposed to stay on. Lexar might just be different in that regard.

Can you plug in your flash drive and post the last few relevant lines from dmesg please.

You mentioned you had USB ports in the back, did you try them?
I noticed on one of my other machines (even though it runs Windows), that my jumpdrive didn't work in my front USB ports, but it worked in the back ports. I know the front USB ports worked because my USB cable to hook up my camera worked just fine. I vaguely recall reading something once about how the front USB ports aren't quite like the ones in the back. So you may be doing everything right, it's just that the ports on the front don't want to play nice.

Yup, the USB ports on the front don't want to play nice. I put my thumbdrive in the back USB port and it worked just fine.

I'm still curious.

I would like to try a live disk this weekend and see if the front ports will work or not...

thanks again

The front USB ports on my PC are connected directly to the motherboard by individual wires going to individual pins, D+, D-, etc. instead of using some kind of bulk connector. Check the manual for your motherboard and verify that the wires are connected correctly.
